A post where I talk about finishing up my Jaunty Fascinator.
Dogs in my head
There’s a children’s book called Go, Dog Go! that has continually been on my mind throughout this project. In it, two dogs pass one another on various modes of transportation. They pause each time and one dog asks the other “Do you like my hat?” The second dog replies, “No. I do not like your hat.” As I toiled over code, components, and plastic, I tried to embody these two discerning canines, asking myself at every stage of the process, “Do you like your hat?” and more often than not replying “No.” Yesterday, finally, that answer changed.
The ornamental bits
I completely re-did the plastic diffusion part about 4-5 times, cutting off whatever was tacked down and sewing on something else. I tried multiple “flowers,” I tried a sort of semi-inflated scrunchy tube thing, I tried a chaotic whirl of random pieces. All of it looked pretty awful. In a moment of frustration I made another, larger rosette, tacked that on, and decided I liked it. And then I added some wacky ice-crystal wire trim I’d found at the craft store and that did wonders for the look of the thing. After that, I just added some feathers, tweaked the veil, and glued on a few little sparkly crystals.
Et, voila!
It came together. A glowy LED fascinator that looks like a fascinator. I think it’s fun and unique. It does look a little bridal what with all the white but I didn’t want anything to color-clash with the changing lights. I think it's time for a little field test...
