Let's make some music

Playing some electric guitar I never liked that good pickups can be extremly expensive. From the engineer's point of view, I did never understand why there are only few active pickups and why not imtegrate the Amp and ADC into the guitar (also thinking of wireless transfer using TI pure path transceiver chip). And rare earth elements used in good magnets are not the best solution when it comes to emvironmental issues!

Wouldn't it be then not a nice approach to sense the strings directly ? The LDC1000 would offer enough speed and sensitivity, but the coil setup would be somehow challenging. Maybe ... I schould take a look at turntable pickups first ...

Anyway, there is a quite similar roadtest ongoing investigating a microphone based on the chip. I am following very curiously image

The reason why I stay generally away from guitar stuff is because the 'golden ears' in the game kinda make me seasick.  Guitar signal levels are low, so I would be concerned about this working at all.  In the case does, it has a fifty-percent chance of sounding better.  It's resolute, sustain may be better.  As far as harmonics as go, I know my FFT from my ChirpZ, we could always stuff them back in as necessary.  Most raw guitar feeds sound awful, anyway.

I follow electronics because I am a naturist.  Acausal, magical-thinking, golden-ears, either in the field of stereo or music just give me gas.  And this is true of any good engineer, whether he owns up to it publicly or not.

Probably, it will sound different (since the two methods are measuring in different ways - an electric guitar cuts a certain amount of flux (so the magnet characteristics have an impact too) as the wire vibrates (so it depends on the wire position as it vibrates), that may be very different to the field from the coil with no magnet, using the LDC1000. I'm sure it will work, but as a result the sound may have different harmonics (which are probably the reason expensive pickups cost a lot).

It is an interesting use-case however.

Good idea!  Why not just separate the pickup coils and use those for your inductor.
