Kazumi - 11 - Build Part 2

6 Apr 2016

Yesterday I finished preparing the 7 touch pads and started putting together the cables that connect them to the MPR121 breakout boards.

One of the mistakes I have made is ordering the wrong magnetic tape. The one I've received isn't self adhesive and it has striped polarity north-south which makes it harder for both parts to snap in the right position. This has made things longer and is something I will have to change for the next prototype.

Another problem I have encountered is the fragility of the copper tracks where I have soldered the cable to. In fact, the first time round they snapped with a little pull. I managed to sort this out, but I am definitely worried about the durability of this so I will have to give it some thought to try and come up with a better solution. However, I tested the continuity with a multimeter and everything seems OK for now so I will stick to this for now.

As I type this, I have received the clear vinyl to protect the electrodes and some cute rubber feet. The vinyl feels quite smooth, which is a relief as I recalled these matte translucent ones to be quite rough.

Just love this dialog. I feel like I am involved with the trials and transmutations. Thanks for a well done job, Clem

Very nice design : ) Looks like a space travel capsule or something!

I suspect that adding a large piece of circuit board will prevent the snapping, as you'd need to break the wire in the ribbon cable.

The pen may work, but the stuff I was referring to was a clear spray.

It came in matt or gloss and the NZ branded item is Moana Fixative.

Try searching for a 'fixative' to see what comes up.

The company you got the film from may have some ideas/solutions as well.

Hey Mark, that's very helpful. Having the wire between the copper track and the cable definitely makes sense, as what it needs is that extra bit of flex to avoid it snapping from the tension. If it still snaps, maybe some hot glue after soldering?

I'm not sure what spray you mean, but I've found this, which I'm not sure will work. SEAL IT Pen Graphics Lettering Edge Sealer Application Sign Making Vinyl Tool | eBay

    Very interesting project.

    For the attachment.

I'd suggest using a piece of circuit board stuck on the rear for the wires to attach to.

You can then run a fine wire onto your film much like a speaker has the coil wire runnig onto a pad that will accept wires.

In your previous blog, you were concerned about the film lifting.

I recall using a product that was sprayed over lettering to stop it rubbing off.

You might be able to find a similar product that can be applied and will not affect the capacitance.

Nice update, but I wonder if the matte finish might detract from the looks of the unit.

    That copper finish is awesome.
