I'll be using the Xilinx software tool chain on a Linux host and not using a VM running on a Windows workstation.  I'm choosing this because the project i have in mind requires interaction between the Ultra96 and a software defined radio device which is currently controlled by a linux-based control program.  I'll be using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on a roughly 10 year old computer.

Like some others I'l be using the latest version of the Xilinx tool chain, the SDSoC 2019.1 which I'm downloading from https://www.xilinx.com/support/download/index.html/content/xilinx/en/downloadNav/sdx-development-environments.html .

Autumn, and with it drier air, has arrived here in DC increasing the risk of ESD.  I'll be using a static mat, a static strap, and a spudger to reduce the risk of damaging several hundred US$-worth of equipment.  I'll post pictures later.

I think Linux host OS is better choice for your 10 year old computer because the VM may run pretty slow on it. Even running on host OS, your 10 year computer may be still too slow for running Vivado 2019…

Totally agree on that. Better safe than sorry. For the same reason, I'm using my azure kit still in that packing it came in, I'll start using it for project after 15 days. image

I'm also learning FPGA, I'll be following your blogs.. image
