Songspire - Bird identification using sound and Machine Learning

Songspire

Hi all !

First, I want to thank to Element14 for choosing this project (along many others) to be sponsored.

How many times did you heard a bird singing wand wandered what kind/type of bird was singing ?

My project will use Machine Learning (ML) to try to identify the bird that's it's singing .

Because there are a lot of birds (about 11.000 types of birds), I'll just concentrate on those in my living area.

Challenge

The main challenge will be gathering data. And by data I mean, their song or noise. That will be really complicated . And for the ML model to work well, it needs a lot of data.

I will be using Keras for the ML, but using or not Edge Impulse . Still deciding. Edge Impulse is a great "Framework" (don't know if I can call it that) and allows for great flexibility and supports the RP2040 microprocessor (aka Raspberry PI Pico).

The Project

I'll create a 3D printed case for the Raspberry PI Pico, with the Microphone, a button and a small display. Pressing the button, will start to listen  the song for x seconds. After that, will display the photo of the bird it thinks it is.

It will be fun.

Wishing all a great project and I can't wait to read and see what kind of projects people will come up with ! Slight smile

Awesome project!  My wife and I have become big fans of birds and butterflies, leading us to build habitats for them.  Little by little, we are removing lawns and building natural gardens in support of wildlife.  We have built a thriving bird community and a result our yard is full of bird songs.  We have assisted on several organized bird counts/feeder projects.  Over the past three years we have seen a 300% growth in the number of birds and 100% growth in the number of species that are visiting our feeders.

That's awesome ! In Spring, your yard must be full of birds singing  ! How can you sleep with all that "noise" ? Slight smile

I built a feeder for my son and our neighbor daughter and placed it in front of our houses. From time to time we go there and fill it with seeds. It's a nice sight seeing them in the morning feeding ! And, when it rains, it's very funny seeing them taking baths in the small ponds that are formed.

    They are a delight !
