PiCasso Design Challenge : POV Globe Blog #2

Hello everyone!!

I already received the Raspberry Pi kit from the courier. That was very fast!! As we all know, the kit contained a Raspberry Pi complete starter kit, PiFace digital 2 and the Pi Camera v2. Thank you to our sponsor for this great kit!!

So for this weeks update:

For starting the globe I had to think this in reverse "reverse engineer everything". I had to figure how many LED's I plan on using, in order to calculate the diameter of the globe. Since I am using RGB LED's I decided to use an individual addressable LED strip. This way I can make the globe bigger with more LED's which means more detail. I purchased a 1 meter strip with 144 LED's. I will be using 1/2 of the lights on 1 side of the ring and the other half to the inside. The way it will be set up I should be able to give depth to the inside of the globe. I cut the ring out of plexiglass on the CNC. If anyone wants a copy of the .dxf drawing message me and I will send it to you.

Below are photos of my progress:

Above is a picture of the .dxf drawing.

Below is a picture of the cut ring.

I had the CNC mark out where the mounting holes for the Raspberry Pi goes. I the drilled them and put in standoffs to mount the Pi.

The next step was to mount the Pi.

Having laid out the holes on AutoCad it made it easy to centre the Pi so it would be centred. Next I made a jig so I can hold the ring at the north and south ends and check for balance. This will have to be constantly checked, at the rotation speed, anything out of balance will destroy the project.

The next update I hope to have the base started and LED's installed.

Thanks for reading!!

That looks interesting; I don't get so far how the ring will turn into a globe I will stay tuned to see the answer in future updates
