I have been spending most of my free time and driving time mulling over the project. I have decided that how the monitor is framed is important to ensure that it has the look and feel of a real window. There are two challenges with this. Mounting the monitor flush in the wall would be ideal but not all construction situations are going to allow that as often basement walls might be 2x4 construction in front of a cement wall. So for this project I will focus on making an encompassing box that will look like a window frame but hang on the wall, much like a fireplace mantle. With a curtain rod and sheer curtains the feeling that this is a real window will be greatly amplified. The sill portion will allow the placement of knick-knacks to complete the effect. For the challenge I will be using a Sony 32" LCD, because I have that available and it is not my primary TV and will not cause my family grief.
I will use keyhole brackets to hold the box to the wall, which will create a tight fit and be very stable.
The top of the box facing the ceiling will have a perforated section to allow ventilation and prevent overheating. A small voltage fan with a temperature sensor will provide overheat protection.
