Raspberry Pi and Karaoke Machine (Wolfson Pi)

Hello everyone,

Few days back I received my Wolfson Pi. It is basically an audio card designed for the raspberry pi. It is the best audio solution for raspberry pi whether input or output. Using this you can use most of the audio input and output devices with the raspberry pi.

Previously we all had problem with audio input and limited audio output functionality.

But now it solves with the new wolfson pi.

Features of Wolfson Pi

  • 3.5 mm jack (4-pole) for a headset/boom mic combination for gaming or VoIP applications
  • Capable of rendering HD Audio, at 24-bit, 192kHz
  • On-board MEMS microphone
  • 3.5 mm jack stereo line output for connection to devices such as external stereo amplifiers or powered speakers
  • S/PDIF input and output
  • On-board class D power amplifier for external speakers, with connection to external power source if needed.
  • Small pin header for extra functions if they are low cost, already on-chip, and don't require any further components
  • Raspberry Pi form factor

There are some positive and some negative point when using Wolfson Pi.

  • Some of the advantages are
  • You can capture stereo audio input
  • Capable of playing stereo sound
  • HD audio rendering
  • Connect almost common audio input and output device

But unfortunately it has the few major disadvantages that it occupies the GPIO port completely so that you are unable to interface any other Pi accessories which are connected using GPIO ports listing Pi Face Control and Display, Pi Rack & Pi Face Digital etc.

Talking to implement it in Karaoke machine it is quite useful as it is best audio solution in the Raspberry Pi as previously we all have faced the audio input issue.

Truly saying for now I only connected it to the Pi but haven’t powered it up because I am unsure about the drivers and usage. Other than that also my downloading of the image file for wolfson pi from http://downloads.element14.com/wolfson/wolfson_3.10_master.zip?COM=DevKitsLearningCenter is not completed.

So for now I am unable to use it or know its usage properly. But assuring that next week I will definitely write about it how to use it and implement it in karaoke.

At last just take a look of my Wolfson Pi and how I connected it to my Raspberry Pi.

If you have any problem and query regarding this don’t hesitate to ask I’ll try my best to answer it. If you have any suggestion’ please comment below.

    Hi sumit

Thanks for posting the info about Wolfson Audio card. I downloaded the manual for this Wolfson pi audio card from http://cpc.farnell.com/images/en_CC/WolfsonRPiSoundcardManual.pdf .In this manual they stated that we need to use a special OS for using this pi audio card with Raspberry pi. My question is ... that mandatory to use this OS for accessing Pi audio card ?? or any other normal flavors of OS such as OPENELEC , Raspbian.... etc with some library will support this pi audio card ??

    Thanks in advance . image
