Save The Bee - Blob Detection And Easy Bricked Nicla Vision Fix

image

Hello, I am Zobaer. I am working on a project to save the bees by detecting hornets among them using Nicla Vision. However, I encountered a problem when my Nicla Vision device got bricked and I had to spend a lot of time and effort to fix it. In this post, I will share with you how I managed to unbrick my device with a simple method and what I learned from my project so far.

First, let me tell you about my project. My goal is to use Nicla Vision to identify hornets that invade bee colonies and pose a threat to their survival. Hornets have different facial features than bees, so I thought Nicla Vision would be able to distinguish them. However, I found out that Nicla Vision is not very good at detecting facial features and the camera quality is also low. What it can do well is detecting blobs very fast. It can easily detect hornets and bees as separate blobs, but it struggles to differentiate them when they are together. There are also different types of hornets, some of which are easier to detect than others. I am still working on finding a way to improve the accuracy of hornet detection and I will update you on my progress.

Now, let me tell you how I unbricked my Nicla Vision device. A bricked device is one that does not respond or function properly. In my case, the LED on my Nicla Vision was constantly red or dim red, which indicated that something was wrong. I tried to flash new firmware to it using OpenMV, but it failed. I searched online for some solutions, but they were all very complicated and none of them worked for me. Then I came up with a simple idea: I flashed a basic LED code to my Nicla Vision using Arduino. This made the device functional again and then I flashed the latest firmware from GitHub using OpenMV. This time it worked and my device was restored to its original state.

I hope this post was helpful for anyone who has a similar problem with their Nicla Vision device or who is interested in my project. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to comment below. Thank you for reading!

Thank you for the suggestion. But I did all the things you mentioned. Even in boot-loader mode I was not able to flash .bin. And it was not the wrong bin as I was able to flash the same bin later. My nicla vision was hard bricked. Before I found my technique this was the only way to fix hard bricked Nicla Vision:

Congratulations viper13, it's great that you were able to solve the problem. In my opinion, it's possible that you may have flashed the wrong .bin file, or the Arduino Nicla Vision was not in bootloader mode. To ensure that it is, try pressing the push button twice before uploading the code. I hope this information is helpful to you.
