Save the Bees - IoT Bee Hive Monitor - blog 1

Hello, Element14 community! As a beekeeper, I am thrilled to have received the Arduino MKR WAN 1310 and Arduino Pro Nicla Vision boards. These hardware components are essential tools for creating an Internet of Things (IoT) bee hive monitoring system, which will allow me to track the behaviour of my bees and monitor temperature changes inside the hive.

I plan to use the Pro Nicla Vision board to capture images and video of the bees inside the hive, and the MKR WAN 1310 board to transmit this data wirelessly to a remote server, where it can be analyzed and monitored in real time. The bee behaviour data will give me insights into the health and productivity of my hive, while the temperature data will help me ensure that the bees are living in optimal conditions.

To begin, I will connect the Pro Nicla Vision board to the MKR WAN 1310 board using the I2C communication protocol, and use the Arduino IDE to program both boards. The Pro Nicla Vision board will be programmed to capture images and video using the onboard camera, while the MKR WAN 1310 board will be programmed to transmit this data to a remote server using the LoRaWAN protocol. In addition, I will also use sensors to monitor the temperature and humidity inside the hive, which will be connected to the Pro Nicla Vision board. I will use the Arduino IDE to program the board to read these sensor values and transmit them along with the image and video data to the MKR WAN 1310 board. Once the data is transmitted to the remote server, I will use a web interface or mobile app to monitor the behaviour and temperature of my bees in real time. This will allow me to quickly identify any issues with the hive and take corrective action if necessary.

I am excited to start working on this project and am grateful for the hardware gifts that will make it possible. The Arduino MKR WAN 1310 and Arduino Pro Nicla Vision boards are powerful tools for creating IoT applications, and I look forward to exploring their capabilities and creating a robust bee hive monitoring system. In addition, I hope that this project will inspire other beekeepers to use technology to monitor and protect their hives. As the bee population continues to decline due to various factors, it is more important than ever to protect these vital pollinators, and IoT bee hive monitoring systems can play an important role in doing so.
