A small update which may be a big issue

Issue is resolved

Today I received an email from UPS.

It was about Customs.

That wonderful thing that everyone hates.

To put it bluntly, the kit for Sudden Impact is stuck at a UK airport and I am being questioned for information that I don't have. Farnell is trying to sort this out on my behalf, but I am afraid that if everything does not work out as it should this'll be my last update.

Yes, I am probably worrying too much about this, and everything will probably be fine in the end, but it's not something I've ever had to deal with before.

Anyone else been in a similar situation?

Josh

Too bad. Looks like you need to rely on Farnell to solve this problem

Yes, same thing here. Hopefully they will be able to sort it out.

I also got a mail from UPS today. They were asking for permission to handle the customs stuff for me, for a better description of whats inside of the package, and then for an 'EORI number'. One needs to know that this is only for companies, and  not needed for individuals. Fortunately I had these issues before (the last timer actually with the ForgetMeNot challenge kits), so I could just write them I don't have such a number because I'm not a company. Customs clearance took about 2 hours after that, so I should receive my stuff tomorrow. Its still too late to finish my prototype before the skiing vacation roadtest starts image

I was asked for the following:

    - Customs procedure

    - Commodity Code or Plain language goods description

    - Your Eori number

    - Approval to use your Deferment Approval Number (DAN), where appropriate

    - Any other information we must take into account when completing this Customs declaration on your behalf

Is all of this for companies and not individuals?

The description is needed in all cases, the commodity code is difficult (and UPS should be better in providing it, but actually Farnell should have provided this). The EORI number is just for companies, and not needed for individuals. We have no DAN in Germany, and probably its not needed. For the customs procedure - I don't know. I would have written that the package contains stuff thats a gift for you from Farnell, that you are an individual, and that Farnell actually should handle all the customs stuff and the fees associated with it. That should settle it - after all, caring about all this stuff is one of the reason to use UPS...

I can't really declare it as a gift due to the following:

To qualify as gifts, goods must be:

    • described as gifts on the customs declaration
    • for a birthday, anniversary or other occasion
    • bought and sent between individuals (not companies)
    • intended for personal use

EDIT: This just appeared on the UPS tracker: The sender must provide a unique customs identification number so that the package can be cleared.

I meant 'gift' as in 'provided for free, I don't need to pay for it'. You can always explain what its really for (an electronics design contest).

The UPS status gave me the same status message, and telling them whats in the package, and that I'm an individual (and giving them my home address) was enough.
