I received a nice Multicomp DMM as a prize in the Twist, Turn and Move Design Challenge for my Sammy Semaphore entry:

For some reason there is a ball bearing in the package? Any ideas what that is for?

Thanks element14, it was a fun project.

By the way, one feature I really like on Multicomp meters is the separate power switch. This means you don't have to crank the dial to OFF after every use, which reduces wear on the dial contacts and detent system.

No spare bearing in the meter I received. The box packing was in pretty good shape. Some stuff received lately had packaging pretty beat up on its journey.

Good possibility. However the dial detent system is working fine. I've never heard of an extra ball bearing for a detent system. Usually it is the last thing to wear out.
