We have a winner...Beyond the Phone Challenge

Many thanks to everyone who participated. We were very impressed by the creativity and talent of our competitors throughout the course of the challenge, and this presented us with a happy dilemma in choosing a winner.
We believe that it has been definitively proven that Wireless Power isn't just for phones: throughout the course of this challenge, we've seen it used in everything from an illuminated beer tap to a sensor for detecting melanoma.  There's no doubt that Wireless Power can make our world more fun as well as safer.
imageIt is with the thought of safety applications in mind that we've chosen the Grand Prize Winner.  Although he didn't reach all the goals he set for himself, we're happy to announce that Eduardo Iscar Rüland ( ) is the winner of the Grand Prize.  We have been impressed by his consistency, his dedication and we hope that the Grand Prize will inspire him further to achieve his goal of a hermetically sealed, wireless powered transponder for those working at sea.
We are also pleased to announce the winner of the Community Choice award.  With a clear majority of 57% of the votes, Mark Beckett ( ) was the pick of the element14 community.
Please join me in congratulating both Eduardo and Mark; thanks again to all those who participated and thanks to our partners, Texas Instruments, Würth and CadSoft.

    anything created that is of benefit for people is a win for us - especially if we can provide designers and tinkerers with our products and solutions, we are always happy to support.

    We had no special applications or products in mind when we came up with the "Beyond the Phone" challenge.

     

    Lars Fahrbach and I were talking about wireless charged keyboards and mice before our first WPC challenge. So Alex Marconnet pretty much nailed it with his battery-free approach.

    Otherwise we always get surprised by the different ideas and approaches in a positive way. So for this challenge we had some really inspiring entries.

     

    But it´s always hard to go through those 99% transpiration and we know that. But it´s also great to see what people come up with and even though you might not be able to finish your application, there might be people who can use your material and finish theirs.

     

    All in all everyone involved helped pushing a technology that makes our life more convenient and I would say that is what we thought about running this challenge.

    It wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for the discussion we had earlier.

    You'll be pleased to know I have suggested it to the pupils entering another Challenge "technology to assist the elderly".

     

    Christian did ask if you had this in mind when they proposed the 'beyond the phone'.... so I were the ideas anything you envisaged.?

  • Congratulations Eduardo and Mark! It´s one thing to have a great idea, but it´s definitely a lot more challenging getting to the final result.

    knowing them it's probably in some un-reachable area.

     

    Once I reduced the window, it seemed to improve.

    It was great to talk with Christian before it went live, in all an enjoyable experience.
