Another project you might be interested in, is to get a clear but red LED, (not all work, but HLMP-EG15-UX000 does, i.e. ideally water-clear LED, with narrow field of view) and just glue it or pop-rivet it onto card or plastic.
The aim is to make the anode end (the left side in the photo) easy to hold with a finger, and the other side is folded over the edge of the card or plastic. Then, they can rub balloons and stuff, and see the LED flicker when they bring it near.

Thanks, I hadn't heard or thought of doing that, but it'd go down really well with the kids I teach. Will have a look as I probably have a few waterclear hanging around (I've got loads of diffused hanging around from my old job!)
