#badass Woman Project Entry - Katie Dumont

Name:  Katie Dumont

Current hometown:  Redruth, Cornwall, United Kingdom

Did you attend university?  University Of Bath, BEng Computers Electronics and Communications

Current Job:
Stay at home Mum of 2. Also Volunteer as a STEM ambassador and run a weekly Code Club for children aged 8-11 as well as other workshops and sessions for engineering and coding for similar age groups

Your favorite electronics projects from element14 presents or youtube:

I really enjoy taking apart electronics so enjoy the electronics inside series, recently I've enjoyed the Computerized sewing machine tear down as I really enjoy sewing.https://youtu.be/tvLRXLz0Z8E

I'm a fan of LEDs and especially LED Cubes, so liked the LED infinity cube posted by Adafruit https://youtu.be/1sDSVTlRim0

Your project:

I have made an IOT button, which connects over WiFi to a pi based Mosquitto server. MQTT messages are processed through Node-Red which publishes the message to subscribers.

For this project the Pi itself subscribes and changes the screen colour to show the current status of the user, busy (Red) or not busy (Green). The Button also subscribes to this and displays the status to the user for confirmation of current state on the NeoPixel.

Nice project! Good use of an open protocol and mixed platforms to create an effective solution! Also, great taste in other element14 content!

Looks like a really useful project that could be adapted for different uses.

An impressive project including many different technologies. I have not yet grasped IoT so your success in that area is interesting to me. Also, I have not used a programming method for making CAD parts so that was interesting as well. A simple and useful concept that is well implemented.

Oh wow, so that's almost an historic printer then image

Power distribution definitely is a topic on it's own, that's why I thought maybe a plain switch would work for the moment to safe on battery power when it's not in use.

Thanks. Unfortunatly I don't, this was my first attempt at trying a video, I usually ensure i'm the other side of the camera for all home videos etc!

I found myself enjoying itby the end, and learnt lots about what I do differently next time though, so if I do decide to do any further videos and make a channel and let you know image

Thanks, We're upgrading the mounts to aluminum at the moment, as the longer it prints the more off it gets as the PLA ones start getting soft. Should be a good improvment. We were both University of Bath students, so the original parts were bought straight from Adrians office, complete with certificate of lineage from the first reserch project.

I have power management planned, but think to do it with explanation and measuring to show savings etc could be it's own video to give it justice.

the first start would be to wake on button press and then wait for acknowledgement before going back to sleep. If you wanted to display other status on the LED in addition to your own ack (if there were multiple units in use, showing other people as busy would be useful) then having it wake periodically and recieving the last message on connect and back to sleep would be good.

If in regular use then I think that level of power saving may well be sufficient, but if it was to be in a situation where turning it off for long periods of time would be handy then a switch would be a good step.

A long button press to sleep would be an inbetween measure.  Would like to try all the above and do some comparisons.

Nice IOT project, very handy stuff!

Do you have a YouTube video/channel? so i can add you to a YouTube playlist here to keep track of channels/videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFDZhLtOt5g&list=PLUqSARZt5KdEc90IqY_D4yOoR3qGEeSMC&index=2&t=0s

I've seen worse prints coming from more modern printers, to be honest image Great case design and choice of CAD program to design it with.

Instead of clear I found white filament good for diffusing neopixels as well.

The LED being red or off instead of being green is a nice way to safe power.

Do you have plans to add a power switch in there somewhere? I imagine the huzza board consumes quite a lot from the battery, even if it is idling and the LED is off.

Thank you for sharing your project and good luck with the contest!

That's a great idea, hadn't thought about something like that.

If the WiFi reaches you could always set it up to automatically inform you when it connects, rather than the button. Then maybe if you had one too then you could press your button to acknowledge, but change her led to signal an I'll be 5mins, if required.

    Thanks.

I'm a big fan of taking things apart, there's boxes of stuff under my desk that's just been teared down to see what could be used/salvaged/ideas which could be copied.

I found it suddenly made much more sense when I sketched out what I wanted to make, and designed our from the diagram. At first I was doing it all in my head and that got very messy.

By the last few lines I felt much more confident, not yet a master, but won't be scared of doing my next project!

I hadn't come across OpenJSCAD, will take a look, thanks
