I think I worked it out. When Ben explains the hackaday prize, he mentions smoke signals. He is going to use the fans and smoke alarms to set up an automated smoke signal setup in his shop that that can send and read signals.

Theory #2: He's trying to cut down on cigars, so he's developed the ultimate system to automatically blow out the match if he cannot resist the urge?

The show is mostly shot with a Panasonic HPX 170 and the bonus content is shot with a Canon C-100.
