I'm using the "MySensors" eco system (http://www.mysensors.org), usually sensors on an Arduino basis, together with Domoticz for a controller, installed on a RaspBerryPi. Cheap radio modules take care of connectivity.
As I said: endless fun, could continue forever. Always something to do.
