SD Card backup device

Hi TBHS team,

This isn't something unique but it is extremely handy. Photographers are always looking into the best way of making backups when in the field.

I saw the HyperDrive online (HyperDrive Is The iPad Hard Drive ) and thought this is something the TBHS team can definitely do cheaper. The Raspberry Pi will come in handy here.

All we need is a device to make backups of SD cards to a hard drive. A small screen to select files through some interface will be nice. But status lights (waiting for SD card, copying data, copy to hard drive done, drive full, etc) will also do the job and keep costs down.

Will you please consider this in one of your episodes?

Thanks,

Werner

I must admit, I've never understood this : ( Why would someone spend $249 for a device (no hard disk included) when a mobile phone and $2.49 USB OTG cable does the same job? But then, I'm not a photographer…

But then, I'm not a photographer! Maybe they have some specific requirement that I can't currently see.

The RPI would be particularly bad at this, it is lacking USB 3.0 speed. So lots of photos or large videos would result in a very slow transfer. There are other boards with USB 3.0 capability however.

We don't do wildlife photography at night so there is time to wait for the backup to complete. USB 2 isn't that slow. Backups are more important than  speed in this case.
