A super smart thermometer that measures temperature and logs with time stamp, and other information. Creates a log over a period of time. Then downloads information into computer or other devices. Having it talk would be a neat plus feature.

Sounds like a project using parts like https://www.sparkfun.com/wish_lists/34664 . add bluetooth to indoor pc an the sky's the limit.

Why not use a RaspPi and a Temp/Humidity Sensor DHT22 (available from element14)?
Get a full-blown RaspPi and once the H/W and S/W is finalized, put same onto RaspPi
Zero Board.
Below is my Canned Answer to people possibly considering RaspPi
________________________
WRT (With Respect To) S/W for the RaspPi there are Two
Flavors
1.
Raspbian (Debian) O/S gotten at:
2.
Minibian O/S gotten at:
https://minibianpi.wordpress.com/
------------------
I personally have Two separate uSD/SD memory Cards
I boot-up w/ the card that will dictate what I want to do.
Minibian for using the RaspPi to control/obtain Outside
World Parameters.
Raspian (Debian) to use RaspPi as a general-Purpose Computer.
__________
WRT H/W for the RaspPi, there are also many options,
but one is unique:
This being the RaspPi Zero. RaspPi Zero is a stripped-down RaspPi
Board that one would use AFTER you have developed your H/W &
S/W on the Full-Function RaspPi Boards
BTW the RaspPi Zero does NOT have connector for RaspPi Camera
Module
__________
WRT to Learning/Receive-Mentoring about the RaspPi, there are MOOC
(Massively Open Online Courses) courses on the web.

Would this be used more for indoor, outdoor, both, or something else entirely?
I went to the URL suggested by CM. It too, suggests an Arduino Variant to be the Basis for any Weather Station. The Arduino Fio (the variant) appears to use/have : 1) Polymer Ion Batterry to run RTC (Real Time Clock), 2) micro-USB B female connector for charging said battery (NOT used for programming/interfacing w/ this Arduino Fios), Programming, I believe is done thru a Pololu (manuf) USB AVR Programmer such as manuf. p/n 1030, MCM distributor # 83-15690, BUT I think you have to Solder onto pins on the bottom of the Arduino Fio. I just recv'd (physically) a USB AVR Programmer today but my Gertduino does Not get it's Programming thru this device. (I bought it for Insurance, in case I needed it) My Gertduino gets it's programming via the GPIO Header Pins on the RaspPi.
Full Disclosure: I am NOT planning/building with any particular Project in Mind (like a weather station) .I am playing around w/ the various options in both H/W and S/W

Q: How would you describe a person who re-Marries?
