Universal 8 bit Gaming Console with FPGAs

rouverius
rouverius over 10 years ago

There was already the Game Brains project that allowed different Z80 based games to be played on the same console... But what about a universal game console that played all kinds of 8 bit systems; CPU independent. This sounds like a nightmare with glue logic but what about a FPGA?  It should be flexible enough to handle any new system that you want to ad to it.

Of course, this might have already mentioned by others. But it seems with the recent FPGA videos this might be a natural progression.

OOH that would be a fun project, I would love to see this take place. I'd be more interested to see how you go about emulating other CPU systems with an FPGA. Never have had the chance to use one, but…

OOH that would be a fun project, I would love to see this take place. I'd be more interested to see how you go about emulating other CPU systems with an FPGA. Never have had the chance to use one, but I happen to have 2 Cyclone IV dev boards I bought off eBay coming my way. He does this build, I'm really going to want a hands on with it.

FPGA? No. I think this would be better using Rpi, as it has powerful emulation tools.

As this would be an easier project yes, there is already several projects well documented for using the raspberry pi to do this. One of which being RetroPie. I myself have a pi dedicated for this feature. And as the show more or less works towards how to on these projects. Using the fpga to do this would be a good learning experience for many people. Learning how to use the pi for this is also a good topic, however may I direct you to the show archives where he did 2 mame portable builds for this. Even though the mame is really arcade but the underlying principle is the same. Set up RetroPie, install your favorite consoles, and your favorite ROMS, set up controls and happy gaming. There are many resources for your favorite games but I will not give any links for downloading them. Just a disclaimer. It is illegal to have any ROMS in your possession unless you physically own the game itself.  Other than that. Easy as Pi.
