Portable Solar WIFI Repeater

mattboston
mattboston over 9 years ago

I work in IT and need access to WIFI in case I get paged.  In the summer I go quite often to a campground that has a WIFI hotspot at the main office.  If I get paged in the middle of the night, I have to walk up to the office with my laptop since the wifi only reaches about halfway across the campground.

It would be neat to build a portable WIFI repeater using a Raspberry PI, solar panels and batteries encased in a waterproof box that could be placed halfway between where we camp and the camp office.

I could see this used in other applications as well. Good idea? Is there anything similar to it already on the market?

There is this but it may be possible to improve upon

Solar Powered Wireless Range Extender - Solar

Also, depending on the environment, you may not need a repeater if you can use one of these TurboTenna type high-gain solutions

at danets, we enhance your wireless experience: YAGI WiFi antenna

but that would take all the fun out of an otherwise very useful build idea.

As in this scenario you are being paged, then perhaps you could use some of the design philosophy from the GeoCache project whereby you use a low power standby set-up to power up a higher power WiFi repeater device only when needed and then shut it down once done in order  to conserve battery life.

I know where you are comming from. When we take the RV to a park we like to park away from most people who have unruly kids. Like you I am a IT person and have weekends on call. When you camp away from the unruly kids you are a long distance from the signal. I made this, http://www.instructables.com/id/Wifi-Signal-Strainer-WokFi/, and it works for the most part, but not great. This would not only help us but our close neighbors also.
