Hi i have been having problems getting sound to work on my pi any ideas.

Agreed. Until then try working through these instructions to make sure your audio output is correct.Raspberry Pi Documentation
1. you go to TERMINAL
2. KEY IN sudo raspi-config
3. CHOOSE advance options 9
4. you see audio
5. CHOOSE FORCE hdmi OR FORCE 3.5 [headphone jack] mm
6. make sure your monitor has hdmi speaker attached.
7. if not try 3.5 mm
Which OS are you using? Post it and your Pi model identifier with your question in the appropriate forum - unless your Pi is using Raspbian, Then, Samuel's suggestion is spot on.
