I think I have a nice project idea. You can build a small quadcopter maybe with an arduino which stabilises itself in the air if you let go the controls. I think you could use two joysticks: one for lift and tilting right and left and one for tilting forward and backward and turning right and left. To stabilise it you could use an accelerometer/gyroscope, so for example if you fly forward and let go the joystick it stops flying forward and hovers in the air. I don't know how hard it is to build and to code but I think its worth to give it a try.
