Part Harvesting!

Hi Ben,

 

     I'm currently a first year Electronic Engineering student at the University of Reading UK. I was wondering if it would be possible for you to do a video on the best components to stock up on for beginners (Like recommendations of the best PIC's and what the most commonly used resistor values are) and if possible where these components could be harvested from like capacitors from old pc monitors etc as being a student money is always tight! It would also be handy to know the best way of testing these components to ensure they're working before they're put into a circuit!

 

Thanks for the great videos, you're one of the reasons I decided to switch my major from computer science to electronic engineering!

  • Welcome to the community. My personal technique is to harvest parts from EVERYTHING. Any broken electronics will be opened, striped for parts and discarded. Most will contain a few useful parts, and the rest can easily be thrown away. Whether it is a single 10uf capacitor in a calculator or an arcade stick, buttons and a 555 pwm circuit from a broken zx spectrum controller, there is almost always something worth salvaging. I find that older electronics are more likely to contain easy to salvage through hole parts, but modern stuff is worth checking as well.
