I am a long time viewer and have been looking for information on how to polarize a ribbon cable socket.
This seems to be a key way to make sure that sockets are not plugged in incorrectly, but I can find little on a DIY way to do this necessary task.

The PCB header for ribbon cable sockets usually do have a key, see here:
Otherwise, I believe for some applications (e.g. in PCs) they plug up a hole on the socket (there are small plastic inserts for that) if one of the pins is snipped off on the board.
