Underwater camera for fishing

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

As an avid fisherman, I would love to see an underwater fishing camera.  Even something that I can tie on to the end of a fishing line and cast out would be fun.  I'd really like to see what's going on down there.

I thought about using a cheap (under $20) underwater flashlight as a housing.  A micro SD would be good for data storage.  I wouldn't mind having to unscrew the flashlight to turn the camera on.

I took apart a cellphone that I have too look at the camera.  Its small, but I have no idea where to go from there.  I can build things like this with instructions, but I don't know enough to do it on my own.

I would assume that the best, or easiest, route would be to simply buy a small video camera and go from there.  I am open to suggestions.

Thank you.

You seem to have a good idea about where to start. Are you looking for a live or recorded image?

Think you both for the responses. I do not need to view real time video, recording would be just fine. I looked up the JVC camera. It is a little more than I'd like to spend on this. Especially for something…

Hi I am not sure how well a wireless signal would propagate through water, a recorded image may be all you could get and at any depth. Also I wonder about how much light would be available? You would need…

    Hi Trey,

Cellphone cameras are very hard to interwork.

An off-the-shelf low-cost method may be a JVC GC-WP10 Picsio, it is like a Flip camera but waterproof to 10 m or so. I don't know if that depth is suitable for you.

I had one, they are well-made (I never tried it underwater though!). About the size of a small cigarette packet. They are probably still available from ebay, maybe not

    manufactured any more.

Alternatively I think some people may use the waterproof cases for cameras underwater, but that may be quite bulky for a fishing line!!

EDIT: sorry - may be 10 feet, not 10 meters.

I looked up the JVC camera.  It is a little more than I'd like to spend on this.  Especially for something that could potentially be ruined, by me.

I found two cheapo cameras today.  Both appear small.  Removed from the casing, they could be even smaller

I might order one and see how compact I can get it.

    Very true markvenn.

My initial thought was a surface camera that could be cast out but would sit 50/50 above and below the surface. This should be able to give a clear view underneath.

    Like a glass bottomed boat.
