8085 based computer like apple 1

Hi, I'm very new to this community. I've been impressed by the apple 1 project did by Ben. He used an 8 bit processor for that. Recently, I've gone through the architecture of Intel 8085. Its very easy to learn and use. 8085 being an 8 bit processor, I wonder whether we could do the same with this.. Looking forward to know what you are thinking about this suggestion.

I thought that was a MOS Technologies 6502 or something like that, in the 6800 family.

You might do better to put some pressure on your educational establishment to move forward from the 1970s !

If what you say is correct (and I have no reason to doubt you) then it is truly dreadful that the people delivering these courses haven't mamaged to update the content in 30 years.

Make a big fuss, and teach yourself over the web about AVR, ARM (and 8086 too, if you like).

6502 isn't a 6800 family part - they were designed by different companies and had different architectures although they had very similar hardware arrangements (and could use each others peripheral chips).

The only interesting thing about the 8085 is the fact that it was a 16/8 bit cross over. Not too many like that. But should not be overly emphasized.

They are like cousins. You're right, I mis-stated what I meant which was 'weren't the early 8-bit apples 6502s or some kind of 6800 variant?' I woke up and posted after exhausting all of my insomnia remedies without result. Bleary 5 AM thing. Guess all that I really meant to say is that our submitter seemed to be confusing something from Intel/Zilog world with something from Motorola world.

Here is an interesting chip, now long obsolete, but still interesting, from that era.

Hi Clem!

The bad thing about that guy IMHO was the weird memory paging scheme 'til the MMU came along.

A neat thing, besides what you mention, was the close coupling with the optional math coprocessor. Again, IMHO.

Two processor architectures that I find rather orthogonal and non-idiosyncratic are 68HC11 and msp430, on the lite end of the field.
