Open Source Science

I would like to see a incubator that can hold two patri dishes wide and a test tube rack inside. It would also be good if it could use an ardrino or raspbary pi and is open source and can be made under a $100. I had ideas of using a toaster oven but not sure since it needs to be on for 24/7. It also needs to hold a constant temp at at least two setting room temp and body temp. This is a good project for opening up biology to people who cant afford $500-2000 incubator.

Thank you for your time and i hope to see it on the show soon.

I am not sure what sort of temperature limits you require, but you might think of using a beer/wine heating mat - that is used to heat up to 5 gallons to about 25 deg C - with a slight mod and thermal control in a small area you might be able to get a higher temperature inside a small clear plastic made green house type unit. Most persex can be cut by Stanley knife and super glued. Also the Perspex can be acquired in various colours. With the use of an Arduino or raspberry Pi to control the temperature. A project that might cost about £75 to £100 (assuming $US, this would be about the right price range) - If all worked reasonably then a small fan could be included to even the temperature more, and a venting system with filtration through simple first aid gauze might be possible
