There are many notebook computers available from AliBaba that are very cheap (under $100). Would it be possible to gut one and replace the motherboard with a Raspberry Pi (perhaps new version 2)?

Primary advantage would be to provide a monitor/keyboard/case for the RPi. For many of these ultra cheap netbooks, the RPi B2 is actually more powerful than the processor that comes in them. Also, most of these netbooks run Android and are apparently difficult to install Linux on - replacing their motherboard with an RPi would solve that problem easily.
actually your thought that the Pi 2 would be more powerful is false. Most of the laptops there have 1 to 2 gigs of ram, and the Pi 2 only has one gig, they have from as little as 4 gig to 40 gigs while the Pi 2 has none and no port for a Sata connection. The only thing the Pi 2 has on its side is that it is a quad core cpu. there is no place to connect a optical drive on the Pi 2.
