Combo 3D Printer, CNC Machine and Laser Cutter

Hi Ben,

 

I recently had an idea for a combination 3D Printer, CNC Machine and Laser Cutter. The machine would have an X, Y and Z axis, just like a 3D Printer, however the extruder would be removable with some form of clip. These heads would be a 3D printer extruder, a drill head for the CNC machine and a laser.

 

I tried to design this myself however I gave up due to a lack of money and knowledge.

 

Would be great to see this on the ben heck show!

  • Fun idea, though each of these devices has very different software that controls them. Each part would require a separate "brain" which might get expensive, but it would be an awesome tool!

    Still cheaper than having all three :3

     

    And maybe you'd be able to program your own microcontroller to act as all three.

    Unfortunately CNC routers don't get on well with the other types of machine. They require a high torque drive system, usually accomplished with threaded rods, whereas the other two need speed and so use belts. Combo systems have been made, but unfortunately they have vastly increased print times compared to a conventional 3d printer. A laser and printer combined is potentially possible, but make sure to be VERY careful when using lasers. proper safety googles are a must, and the unit should be fully enclosed when operating to minimise the risk. I recommend researching laser diodes and C02 lasers combined with flying optics. C02 has more power but is a lot less safe and harder to make than diode based options. I combined controller sounds possible to me.
