hello Ben and your wonderful crew. First i must say i love your show. I have seen every episode and wait for the new one every week. So keep up the good work everyone. All right, just watched episode 188 love it. it got me to thinking could we build a 16-bit system that could combine the best aspects of both consoles or even better than that surpass them. I would love to see this done and have always wanted to build a system from scratch. If anybody an accomplish this Ben can, and make it fun and educational in the process. If you choose not to do this its ok i understand but i look forward to hearing from you/crew

thanks

chris ayers

Be safe and Keep up the great work.

This would be a fairly complex thing to accomplish, but I believe it would be possible.  It might even be possible using period correct components and technology, but that's a much steeper challenge.  The hardest part would be shrinking it down into a proper video game console size as a DIYer.  You'd no doubt need a double sided PCB design made.  Even after the hardware, you'd have to come up with a software package.  Cartridge based would probably be the easiest game format.

yes it is a steep challenge, but also very possible. period correct components is a must. I have done much digging around

but never dove in. there is this book that i have read some of http://www.amazon.com/Black-Video-Game-Console-Design/dp/0672328208

and this laddy built a 6502 consloe/pc? from scratch http://quinndunki.com/blondihacks/?p=680

along with many others. I was hoping this would be a cool multi part build for Ben and his crew.

In both the zx spectrum and apple!portables, Ben esentialy wired up computers by hand. Whilst he was following an existing design, this is still very similar to that idea. Also, most prototypes for very complex systems like this would probably have been made with wire rap instead of pcbs.
