The components that draws most of the power in the game gear I think it's the lcd display lamp and it's associated interver circuit. Some people change it to leds but it is difficult to do without getting noticeable bright spots on the screen.
Some German guys made a backlit screen for replacement but I think it's a little bit expensive.
