Hi Ben, absolutely love the show! I've been binge watching for weeks now and the show has really re-peaked my interest to return to electronics, tinkering and building things by hand (vs software development) which I haven't done since I was ~15 years old (34 now). My suggestion is for something I'm working on, as well as, seeing a lot of in the forums (both element14.com and at raspberrypi.org) and with recent news released about insecurity from security CCTV and IP PoE Cameras, I think it would be a great project - although someone has built a camera in a giant CCTV outdoor camera housing, I think most people are looking for something smaller.
News (Bad):
- 70+ brands of security cameras are re-branded cameras one Chinese manufacturer, which has a problem with security. This specific issue has been picked up by thieves that are able to watch for input codes to safes, key storage locations, time stores are open, etc. - Source: [https://www.grc.com/sn/SN-555-Notes.pdf | Kerner on Security: Remote Code Execution in CCTV-DVR affecting over 70 different vendors | http://thenewstack.io/snooping-webcam-reveals-security-dangers-internet-things/ ]
- Additionally IP POE cameras that were sold on Amazon contain malware, essentially an iframe in the admin and remote viewer that points back to www.brenz.pl/rc/ a known malware hosting site - Source [Mike Olsen — Beware, even things on Amazon come... ]
With the two aforementioned issues we, as hackers and builders, need to be able to solidify our network security and provide help to our family and friends by building our own trusted IoT devices. The smaller dome ceiling mounts would be best, however, I know that storing a PI3 + PoE (hat or not) + camera may be difficult to fit into the base, so maybe a Pi zero + Poe + usb camera (although USB would be using 30-60% CPU for that USB input). I really like to see your custom builds and how you fit things together into smaller packages it really gives me good ideas.
I'm currently in the beginning steps of a CCTV + home automation project using a Raspberry Pi 3 + RPi camera for inside the house. I want to incorporate the Rpi 3 + RPi camera (using CSI) + a good embedded microphone array (if I can find out) + speaker (to be able to have an alexa type system) + screen for voice control confirmation and viewing other rooms when you hear kids getting into something. All of this will be to a single server that records the camera feeds when scheduled, view all cameras, and voice control (basically the server does the work, wall units are just terminals). The speaker and microphones would be doubled as intercom and kiddo monitors at night time.
Thanks for your time,
Daniel
