Hi Ben,
I love your show. It's my weekly saturday morning routine to drink coffee and watch your show. Keep up the good work!
I currenty own a Microsoft Surface RT tablet. Love the device because it's quite rugged and, because of passive cooling, I can use it in the woodworking shop without having to fear wood dust getting inside the device. Very handy because now I don't have to print everything.
Downside is that the screen is a bit small and it's slow. New Surface tablets are available but too expensive for my taste and they are not passively cooled anymore. Also I still would like a bigger screen (letter size would be much better).
Last year or so I read on Hackaday about people buying iPad displays in China (~$60). With a converter you can send HDMI signal to it and use it as an extra retina display on your pc. I don't remember if those displays come with touchfoil included.
Such a screen would make a great start for a DIY tablet. If you can find an Intel Atom board then it starts to become a portable pc.
There have been attempts to build a tablet on Youtube and kickstarter but so far I haven't seen people really finishing it. Or they use a Raspberry Pi, which is great, but kind of limited.
I like to be able to customize the computers I work with. The mobile phone you made earlier was a great build. Building your own tablet would be a nice next step.
Regards,
