Mastermind game using LEDs

I actually made this, however getting good quality LEDs for me is impossible, anyway back to the project.  Create a Mastermind game (the one where one person picks 5 colored pegs and the other player tries to guess) but the pegs in this game are actual LEDs.  I came up with the idea after learning about voltage drop of diodes/LEDs so I was able to know what color of LED was inserted in.  I'd be glad to share the code I've done, and I wish I had good LEDs that had non-variable voltage drops which is the only reason I haven't finished it.  Anyway, thought I'd send the project idea your way to see if you can solve what I could not.

  • That's a nice idea. What are the LED colours you're working with? Red, green, blue, amber and white, maybe?

     

    One way to make things easier would be to add an extra diode in series with some of the LED colours. A small Schottky diode like a BAT42 would add about 0.3 or 0.4V at the current you'd drive an LED at. A 1N4148 adds about 0.7V. That way you could move the voltage drops apart and make them more straightforward to recognise.

    with the LEDs that I have (some cheap generic ones from Amazon) from experimenting I've found blue and white are pretty similar as are green and yellow but red sticks out like a sore thumb.  I may make a module using pins/headers that will include the LED and diodes and see where that gets me.
