Things I'd like to see in future VR technology.

There's one thing I've been dreaming about since 2004 or even before that, that's a virtual desktop environment, so that we could have a screen that surrounds us completely. No need for bigger and bigger monitors anymore, just one single high resolution (and lag free) display to go in front of your eyes. Although, it could be annoying to have to wear something on your head for many hours straight. Now, we might sort of have that already (someone must have implemented that), but I don't remember ever seeing one.

Hardware wise, which concerns Mr. Heck & Dorn (erhm...), maybe gloves that would allow us to manipulate windows with both hands, pinching in the corners to resize them, etc. (which btw, could probably work better in VR than the "pinch to zoom" we use in touchscreens today), but said gloves would have to be very light and allow for a lot of air flow. What I imagine is something like elastic rings on your middle phalanges, with sensors, connected to a very minimal amount of components on your wrists (like watches), which should communicate wirelessly with a bigger device nearby, if needed.

Another idea is some device that would allow for tactile feedback, something that would not allow me to push my hand further if I touched a wall, for instance. But I don't think that would be ever possible without slotting a chip into someone's brain. image

Hi There are two things I would really like to see in future VR technology, one is a bit more complex and one is remarkably simple but people are making some terrible looking versions of the same thing.

The first ting I would like is taste! I think in the future people will eat a sweet like a blackjack that leaves a coating in the mouth which can have information sent to it to generate any taste desired in the mouth, possibly using nanobots to manipulate flavour into the taste buds. This I think will be an extension on a lycra style magnetic morph suit that will generate resistance and the sense of solid objects within the Virtual World.

The second Idea is something like the Omni but instead of feeling like you have a transformer bear hugging you it would have a lot more flexibleablety and be more athletic, which would alow users to run and dive in the air and roll on the ground with lots of fredom yet also saftey. Attached is a quick design idea I have drawn up for this:

I am really excited about the new VR tech it is really fun to play, but I just want it to be twenty years closer to where it is going, it would be great to help with that.

    yours sincerely Leigh Beardimage
