ideas to improve my Gamecube jewel mod

Hey guys,

Over a decade ago I did some serious modding to my Gamecube. I added two big fans on the sides and I put LEDs all over the place, making my Gamecube a true Christmas decoration image.

Now the main attraction is the jewel, which is fully backlit. You can print out any design you want on transparent overhead sheets and stick it in. You can change it on the fly, pretty neet. It's hard to make a photo that's truly representative of how nice it actually looks, but anyway:

For this mod I created a backlight disc by using an 80mm white ring CCFL with sanded acrylic glass, paper and alu tape. This is suspended with rubber bands to the lid, which allows you to easily swap logo cards:

Now this approach works pretty well, but is a bit crude. I'm planning on doing some more of these mods and I'm looking for better ways to do this:

  • I've been looking into using backlights from smartphones. However I can't seem to find one of the right size, and I don't quite know how to connect one.
  • Also I'm looking for ideas for better mounting.
  • Even more fancy would be to use an LCD screen with a Raspberry Pi or something to make the jewel an actual working screen image.

So do you guys have any suggestions? Thanks!

I found out there is a smartphone that has a square screen that is exactly the right size: the Blackberry Passport from 2014. You can buy replacement screens for as little as 15 bucks, like here: https…

I like the simplicity of this and how easy it is to change out the image. It's a good initial hack that you can expand on. If you end up adding a screen, please post about it. I'd love to see any updates…

I like your idea of the raspberry Pi and an LCD.  That would be very customizable. There should be plenty of information on the site here to get you going on updating your Gamecube.

I'm looking around for LCDs or OLEDs that would fit, but I can't seem to find any. A round or octagonal one would be best, but those are only available in smaller watch sizes.

The hole's diameter is 80mm, by looking at the fourth photo you can get an idea of what would fit and what not.

Do you have suggestions for what screen would be a good fit?

You can buy replacement screens for as little as 15 bucks, like here:

Do you think it's doable at all to make a screen like this work on a Pi or something?

Another option would be to just use the entire phone. The software would have to be hacked so that it boots when the cube gets powered and then show an image, preferably fast. Since it's a Blackberry this probably is hard to do, and pricy too.

    Any thoughts from you guys?
