Wire 3.5mm headphone jack to

Im doing a retropie project and I was wondering how I can wire a headphone jack to my adafruit amplifier while keeping external speakers. I want it to recognize when I plug in headphones and turn off the speakers and play the output through the headphone jack.

 

Is there another component that I need?

    Hi!

     

    You certainly can do this, the typical part used for this is a 3.5mm jack but with extra contacts - more than the usual 3 contacts (for left phone, right phone and ground).

    If you get a three-way one (i.e. stereo not mono) with 5 physical contacts, then the remainder two are usually 'normally-closed' so they can feed audio to your left and right speakers. When the headphones are pluged in,

    those two contacts get disconnected, so audio exclusively goes to the headphones only.

    You can use either this PCB mount 3.5mm socketPCB mount 3.5mm socket or (perhaps a better idea) a 3.5mm socket with solder lugs3.5mm socket with solder lugs for wiring up to some cables.

    I don't know anything about the adafruit amplifier but you could examine it to see if it has such a socket on it, and any locations for wiring speakers. If it doesn't, then get the part mentioned, and connect to it

    (google will have the information on how to do it, but check the part datasheet for the pinout).
