Convert a laptop display for stand-alone vga connection

Hey Ben,

I wondered if it is possible to convert an old laptop display to be powered by usb and video out from usb or vga.

I guess an original lcd driver board and a converter will be needed for the project, it could be used as a second monitor for a laptop

or for a desktop pc. Will usb be enough to power it since usb monitors can be run from a single port.

Thanks, any feedback from anyone else appreciated also,

/Dante

It is difficult at best to make this happen and in almost every case cheaper to buy a used LCD screen or even buy a new LCD screen.  As for power from a USB port, this is only possible when talking about LED backlit screens and the like.  Most screens ripped from a laptop of old would require larger power amount and AC power to the inverter in most cases.  Just buy a Mimo really...  Much simpler...

Amos is correct. It would be nice to use laptop screens in anything but the laptop they came with, but the difficulty is such that yes, it's easier just to buy a standalone monitor.

You can get a 23" ASUS for what, $180 these days?

    Thanks for the responses,

it's a shame because there are so many laptop displays available so cheep.

I'll look a little further into LED displays but it does look like it is a lot easier to just buy one. image

    Thanks, Amos and Ben.
