Viewer Challenge: Android Tablet

Former Member
Former Member over 14 years ago

I have an old HTC Touch Pro 2.  The screen on it broke so I upgraded to the EVO.

The devs over at xda are able to get android running on the TP2, so I am wondering if you could modify the TP2 into an Android Tablet.

I got the idea when I saw the announcement of the Nook Color.  Nook already has an app that runs on Android, so that would be very attractive.  Also, android tablets are going to be a big thing this holiday season I think. (Samsung Tab, etc)

I imagine you'd have to:

  • replace the display with a larger (7" to 10") touchscreen display
  • figure out how to drive video to the display
  • replace the battery with something more robust
  • fabricate a case.

I'm willing to ship you my old TP2 for the project.

The screen resolution wouldn't be that great though. it would be about half the res of the phone

instead of taking an old phone and trying to convert it into a bigger tablet which would result it a sluggish tablet as the hardware of the phone won't be able to power the tablet sufficiently I think the starting point needs to be something more powerful. I would like to see a DIY Android Tablet of some kind be made as that would be awesome. Maybe iPad to Android although I doubt the hardware would support it (on purpose since Apple are tools).

The resolution of the TP2 is 480 x 800.  It wouldn't be as sharp as the Galaxy Tab or an iPad, but on a 7" screen it would be okay.  And it's possible that the resolution problem could be fixed in software.

If you think this is a cool idea then Like the original post and maybe Ben will consider it.

Also, the keyboard of the TP2 could be incorporated into the tablet design.  The TP2 keyboard is really fantastic. If I knew how to resolve the LCD display adaptation then I would do this myself.  Any tips?
