Viewer Challenge - Netbook to "Dash"

Hey Ben,

I think I have a challenge for you, that is right up your alley.

I have an old EEE pc 2Gig Surf laying around that I dont use anymore. What I want to do with it is build a Linux based Sony Dash type unit. For me the main things are touch screen, alarm clock, rss feeds and the weather. I would love to see what you can do with this project before I go and get started on mine, (This would be my first major hardware hack). I can't wait to see if you have any ideas and what you can do with this idea.

So Ben I Challenge you to build a Sony Dash, from an EEE PC!

Thanks Ben

Your friend in the North

Rick

I dont mean to be negative because I think it would be cool to have something like that but using an EEE PC 2GB Surf wouldn't be viable as it isn't a touchscreen and the hardware isn't very powerful even brandnew. 2gb harddrive is very small. Besides the Dash is only $170.00 so it would cost more to DIY it than to just buy one at least with that starting point.

However if there was a challenge for maybe an Android Tablet you could use that to do everything you said regarding the Dash.

That is true, it would most likely cost more to do this from an EEE pc, but doing it from an Andriod tablet takes practically nothing more then a stand of some sorts. The Dash really doesnt need a large hard drive it isnt storing much of anything, and to add touch screen to an EEE costs little more than $15. As well, hardware hacking isnt all ways about doing something on the cheap, Im sure that a PS3 laptop for example costs a considerable amount if you take into consideration all the parts that need to be manufactured, not including the console itself. Hardware hacking is more about using what you have, or can get, to make something do what you want, or need and I dont think that cost is that importent. After all if cost was the number one concern, most hardware hacks wouldnt be done at all.
