Build Request - A Daft Punk inspired coffee table!

Hey Ben,

I'd love you see you build a coffee table inspired by the one Daft Punk created for Habitat's Very Important Product collection. I'd build one myself, but to be honest... I'm not a hardware guy. Many people have recreated the project, and Arduino based code is open source and readily available online. It's really just a box holding an array of LEDs hooked up to an Arduino and covered in red plexiglass squares.  You just can't look at this thing and not want to build it.

Here's what it looks like in the wild

And here's the code I'd use if I built it.. it may need to be modified a bit (to rip out the iPod interface). Luckily although I'm not good with hardware, I am a software guy (with experience in C++) and I live in Wisconsin!

MAKE IT HAPPEN!

dude thats awesome... right now i am studing for computer programming but all we do in class is some raptor stuff... i really dont like raptor its suppose to be for mega noobs at programming. im just a noob that prefers visual basic. ive fiddled around with visual basic and it uses psudocode instead of what raptor uses... shapes. yes if you dont know what raptor is its uses shapes... appearently it was made for them air force people to learn programming. personally i think its harder to learn programming on raptor than anything else. ive got both c++ and visual basic on my computer. i havent made anything really big on visual basic. only like a file deleter, a file deleter with multiple forms, and a calaculator. o if your like a pro or something did you use that raptor thing in collage?

I don't know, it has way too much of a "Saturday Night Fever" vibe to it. Looks way more disco than Techno.

It would be cooler to make the internal lights a very light blue, and have them cylce through animated game sprites from the 70s.

Also, a Kevin Flynn MCP computer desk would be cool to.

    Hey Matt,

I've heard of Raptor, but never played with it. In college we worked with C, C++, Java, Scheme, Haskell, and a few others (including a small amount of Visual Basic .NET) Don't sweat not liking Raptor, there are a few languages I don't love to programing in. I like to think of it like a challenge though... like "What can I make this thing do that no one else would bother trying to". You'd be impressed by the kinds of things you can make out of popsicle sticks and bubble gum... or shapes image

    RovertScott,

...alright so it does feel a little disco. I love the idea of game sprites, not sure if it would be easy to work in the amount of led's you'd need for something like that. Or even if the Arduino could handle that. I think you could do 64 led's without too much hassle.. you think 8x8 would be enough?
