Laptop LCD to Desktop monitor conversion

I've done one laptopscreen to vga convertion, and basicly what you need to do is search for lvds converter for your screen (ebay is probably good place to start). I think all laptops have the lvds stuff embedded with the motherboard, so basicly you always need a converter to mach to your screen. most of the cheap chinese converters support multiple screens and costs something like 20 to 50usd

normal lcd screens and some small screens (check this http://metku.net/hwforum/viewtopic.php?t=6458), have the lvds stuff mounted somewhere with the screen panel, so you can sometimes just solder the connector quite neatly to there, but with laptop screen's I'd say you always need to have a converter, and usually the screen isn't so good in quality, so it's not really worth the money.

How about a dozen laptop screens rolled together into a big screen TV?

it would be cheaper to get one big ass tv

but I think you need to have a "matrix box" to do that anyway.

It would be actually very interesting to find out if you could buy a "matrix box" which you could directly plug to the monitors & inverters and it would also handle the lvds convertion to one input

I have a WXGA screen, could I just jery rig the wires up?

Ryan: without the lvds controller, I don't think so.

If you check the data sheet inputs there's only lvds pins, also you need something to control the screen brightness/contrast/backlight/timing and probably bunch of other stuff as well. If you check the youtube link that killarshark gave and end up in the ebay link, that controller is all you need to buy.

But be careful when buying those controllers, be sure to check if your screen model is listed, otherwise it won't work or, it works in a wrong resolution.

could I ripout a controller from the matching laptop?

well It's there somewhere embedded with the motherboard so maybe in theory you could find the surface mount chip somewhere and solder it off and... well good luck with that

there's a good reason why people buy those controllers
