I've done this, admittedly by cheating a bit. I installed a 12 V DC rail system in my house from my 60 W solar panel array, and used a car adapter for my laptop. Does that count?
I'll admit that I'm a bit of an efficiency snob. I prefer a good DC-DC to an inverter, but, in the words of the great Teddy Roosevelt, "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." Any solar is good solar!
