Viewer Challenge-  Larson Scanner

hunter1919hunter

I would like to build a larson scanner like the one in Kight Rider. Im thying to build one like http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/science/cca8/?cpg=froogle. Im trying to put it in my car and come on when the car is on. The link scanner is built with a switch and that will not work.

  • I would like to use 5mm or 10mm red leds
  • I could not use an arduino
  • a main switch on the dach to turn off when not in use when driving

Thanks,

Hunter

Why do you want a switch on the "Dach" (German word for roof, or here the top of the car) ?

Why can't you just use an Arduino? There are plenty of exits to use for LEDs.

But as far as I know, it is forbidden to mount such useless things on your car, for security reasons ( backlights are red).

If you want to stay out of troubble with the police, you shold forget about doing so.

    cheers, Hunter

Probably becuase an arduino is excessive for whats actually needed. All you would need is an oscillilator like a 555, to trigger the input on a johnson counter (4017) which can drive upto 8 led's, I would also probably drive each led though a transistor as 8-10mm may draw more than the chip can handle.

*** EDIT: simple google search returned this:

NE555 should do the trick, yeah. Then again I'm the one trying to do it totally old school using nothing more complex than transistors and other basic componants. The only reason to use an Arduino on this is that it has better fade out effects for the LEDs. That and the fact that they don't need as many rectifiers.
