Wire Color Codes Help

RovertScott
RovertScott over 14 years ago

I have an alarm clock that is no longer working properly and I have taken it apart inorder to repurpose it.

Powering it though is a bit tricky as I have never seen these particular wires before (I am a noob as it is called).

Coming off of the transformer there are four white wires:

1. With Short red Dashes

2. with red Xs

3. With Long red Dashes

and

4. E80972 2468 9L AWM etc all in red

There is also a 9volt battery backup, but it does not seem to do anything when hooked up.

I have removed the transformer from the board by snipping the wires coming from the transformer.

Iwould appreciate any help.

Unfortunately these wire codes are quite arbitrary and don`t follow a standard outside of the company that made the transformers.

but if you have a test meter, it`s a fairly trivial task to do a resistance check across these wires and write down what connects to what, and the value presented.

from there you can work it out easily, the Mains side will have the Highest resistance of all.

If you already Know which is the mains input, then it`s simply a case of isolating the output wires (maybe solder them to a track on a piece of vero-board, one track for each wire), and then test the voltage out with your meter on the AC setting, and I`d probably start on the 20 volt range.

you may find that there are Center tapped windings too, these are nice transformers to have as you can make a full wave bridge with only 2 diodes.

hope that helps a little image

Thanks for the advice, I need to get a new Test Meter as I have not seen mine in quite a long time. Just wanted to know if someone knew of these wire codes so I could proceed without it.

I did manage to get some work done on my project, but the ability to de-plug from the power grid will make it much more managebable.
