I put some more thought into this and decided that RFID isn't a good idea if John has a brother... He may just decide to steal his RFID tag. A numeric keypad with a pin would work better. Moreover, GPS…

RFID tag used to identify user, then using gprmc[0] establish a time played (sounds like an arduino project to me).  After time is up give an audiable alarm and an lcd counter with 60 seconds on the clock to save the progress.  Turn off game controller access until a RFID tag with available time enables it.

I put some more thought into this and decided that RFID isn't a good idea if John has a brother... He may just decide to steal his RFID tag.  A numeric keypad with a pin would work better.  Moreover, GPS are costly and well, I have one laying around so which is why it came to mind;  a ripple counter to count the number of seconds would probably be cheaper.  Another thing... you wouldn't want your time eatin' up when idle; so making a curcuit to only count when not idle would surely work in John's favor image

What other ideas do you have for similar builds or ways of encouraging your kids to "earn" tokens or time for their video game time?

Web integrated rewards program would be an idea way to reward school children.  Example, John does his homework (say math because we all love it image so much), have a system to where he can log in and input his answers.  In return an hour of play time on an integrated entertainment system is registered to his account.  Moreover, say his mother/father give him task for the weekend to water and clean up the yard of pet land mines; after he checks off that he has completed the task, a text message to nofify his mother/father of his accomplishments would be sent,  and his mother/father could release (after verification) his play time or any other digital positive reinforcement.
