Challenge: Immersion

Hey Ben,

With the upcoming Dev Kit of the Oculus Rift (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1523379957/oculus-rift-step-into-the-game)   I am looking forward to programming some truly immersive content.. not just for games but other areas as well.

So my idea is the build an device that one could step into/onto and keep the user slightly elevated off the floor,  similar to like and elliptical machine but a way to secure your self to it so you can't step off or fall off,  and have the motion of the device be fed back into the PC as the forward or backward momentum.

This would be used for a form of exercise.  Like Running around a block in Rome, or and where else without having to leave your home.

So their legs would be free-running?

It's a good idea but seems like a lot of weight would be put on the harness, causing strain wherever you hook it up to your body.

Have you seen the continuous 360 degree any direction treadmill? I think the Army or DARPA built it...

    -Ben

I have seen the continuous tread mill,  and that works great for like a large view screen,  but I don't think it would work for a HMD like the rift, because if the user gets disoriented they could fall.

Yes the legs would be free running,  I've got a draft of a design schematic, but I am not really any good at any of the modeling software.

But basically, the harness could be supported on each side of the hips, and the weight of the user by a couple heavy duty springs, similar to what a porch swing would use(attached image).
