Raspberry Pi Model B laptop

Hey Ben, I wanted to know if you can show me the best way to go about building a raspberry Pi Model B laptop, I need something light, simple and possibly good for someone with limited equipment. The idea is you have the raspberry Pi and you install the main things that makes a laptop well a laptop which in my book is a monitor, a mouse pad, a keybored, USB ports, WIFI, and battery system, I made up some blueprints but due to my limited software at the time of this idea it was made using a simple paint clone (Linux User). I found a image of something similar to what I want yet I was something bigger, more like a 13 inch or something, please Ben try it out or atleast tell me what would be a good alternative.

Here's a pic of a setup I'll build eventually. Raspberyy Pi, 2.4GHz wireless keypad (needs dongle). Asus N-10 Wi-Fi dongle (not shown) 7" LCD with touchscreen and HDMI from eBay.

My idea is to use a portable dvd player for the screen and sound and the case and a micro usb keyboard. You should be able to use the battery pack along with a power regulator to run the Raspi and usb hub.

I'd rather see the keybored installed inside the case but it could be splised into a hub and the only problem I forsaw was wiring in a battery with volt regulator, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to wire the HDMI to a monitor but I'm not very good with hardware.

The only way to use the hdmi is to use a monitor with hdmi or dvi with an hdmi to dvi adapter. Finding one that small would be expensive. unless you go with the small box type of system like the mac mini then you could use a larger monitor. i think you could mount the keyboard in the dvd case as well. and the voltage regulater would not be hard to make.

The Motorola Atrix lapdock makes for a pretty good Raspberry Pi laptop.  One challenge would be to create a mounting enclosure for the Pi that maintains the atheistic of the lapdock.  Also, this teardown might be interesting: http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/05/motorola-atrix-docks-literally-and-figuratively-torn-apart-hack/

That would be the way to go especially for someone new to working with electronics.

Well I did look into the blank laptop and even if it is a good alternative to building one there is already a tutorial on that and I'm sure you can just mount it on the back of the monitor and build a case for it, I still am looking for how to build a laptop from scratch around the Raspberry pi or any other credit card computers.

the pi already (from what Iknow) has ports to attach a lcd display and webcam. and you could use a xbox 360 chatpad as a keyboard. maybe you could even wire up the display as a touch screen

I can understand the desire to want to DIY.  A composite-input LCD is probably the cheapest option for a display if the lower resolution satisfies your needs.  The Raspberry Pi Foundation has mentioned they plan to release an LCD board which will connect to the DSI port on the Pi.  Unfortunately, there is no timetable, and they are working on the camera board for the CSI connector first.

Since you mentioned other card card sized computers, you might also want to check out the BeagleBoneBeagleBone.  The LVDS LCD cape could be useful: http://circuitco.com/support/index.php?title=BeagleBone_LVDS_LCD_Cape
