show idea solar tracker

hey Ben i was wondering if you could do a episode on how to make a solar tracking system I've been trying to figure this out for a long time to help my family get off the grid and be a little more green for some time now. but i just am not to terribly bright when to comes to figuring out circuits mine always end up being terrible and don't do anything so i was wondering if you could help me.

  • Like he mentioned cost is a huge hurdle to jump in this project idea. The solar arrays that use commercial solar trackers cost millions of dollars and are a relatively new technology. Hopefully in the future when the alternative energy field advances, these appliances and technologies will become cheaper and more available.

    Bejamin hit the nail on the head.

     

    A solar tracker, depending on the state, and assuming a system size of 4,000 watts, on on average will provide around two hundred dollars worth of saving per year when compair to a non moving fix tilt installation of the same size. Savings are less than $200.00 dollars per year in some states. In all depends on how much solar energy is available at the specific location. Considering that just the solar modules will set you back one dollar per watt, you are talking about $4,000.00 dollars without the other components, permits, installation, and maintanence.

     

    I am hopeful that present research my bring the cost down to 10 cents per watts but we are not there yet.
